What ages have roll'd by, bearing the wreck
Of nations, as on the expanded sea
Is each comparatively floating speck
Which soon is swallow'd in immensity,
Sincewas each trait'rous dagger raised 'gainst him
Whose eclipsing splendour o'ershadow'd those
Who, however great, shone with a lustre dim
Near one who as the orb of morning rose !
But not the pompous sophistry which brings
The name of Hero, dignifying weak
Despicable Envy, that hid its stings
As in a golden sheath, will ever break
The force of truth whoso pow'r in thunder flings
The gaze to each assassin who such fame Would seek.
