Oh ! there's an awful pleasure which doth thrill
The soul when standing by the dying bed
Of one whose falt'ring tongue will soon be still
In death, to think th' immortal will have sped
A moment's space, where piercing thought is lost
In the immensity it contemplates ;
Like an unequal vessel strain'd and lost.
Then swallow'd by that gulph the surge creates.

If without arrogance I might assume
The Poet's hallow'd title, and entwine
That fadeless wreath, the fav'ring Muses' sign
Unwith'ring when the body in its tomb

Loses all mortal trace, I would express
One fervent wish, that not in vain I sung,
But that my thoughts should reach the ardent —
young And lonely aspirant, — his vigils bless.

More than by blood such kindred are allied,
For what unites like sympathy of soul ?
May my heart-prompted verse some spirit guide
To truth, to excellence, its radiant goal ;
Made potent by celestial light that gives
Aid to the darken'd soul, which living — ever lives.

Indeed I love thee, beauteous woman-kind,
And own that I am never happy when
Amid a social band I do not find
Thy sweetly radiating smiles, for then

The circle has no halo — wit is dull,
Time drags on heavily and murmurs rise ;
But in thy lovely presence, which is full
Of inspiration like the star-lit skies,

The freshen'd mind invigorates her pow'rs
While converse mingles with a chaste delight ;
And when I've been aloof from pleasure's bow'rs,
Enwrapt in gloomy sorrow's darkest night,
Like him* who Afric's wilds explor'd, I've proved
Thy loving sympathy, most worthy to be loved.
