Rudyard Kipling: The White Man's Burden
#1
GB
The White Man’s Burden
(The United States And The Philippine Islands)

Take up the White man’s burden
Send forth the best ye breed
Go bind your sons to exile
To serve your captives’ need
To wait in heavy harness
On fluttered folk and wild –
Your new-caugt, sullen peoples
Half devil and half child

Take up the White man’s burden –
In patience to abide,
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride
By open speech and simple
And hundred times made plain
To seek another’s profit
And work another’s gain

Take up the White man’s burden
The savage wars of peace –
Fill full the mouth of famine
And bid the sickness cease
And when your goal is nearest
The end for others sought
Watch Sloth and heathen Folly
Bring all your hope to naught

Take up the White man’s burden –
No tawdry rule of kings,
But toil of serf and sweeper –
The tale of common things
The ports ye shall not enter
The roads ye shall not tread
Go make them with your living
And mark them with your dead

Take up the White man’s burden –
And reap his old reward
The blame of those ye better
The hate of those ye guard
The cry of hosts ye humour
(ah slowly) toward the light
(“Why brought ye us from bondage
Our loved Egyptian night?”)

Take up the White man’s burden –
Ye dare not stoop to less –
Nor call to loud for freedom
To cloak your weariness,
By all ye cry or whisper
By all ye leave or do
The silent sullen people
Will weigh your god and you

Take up the White man’s burden
Have done with childish days –
The lightly proffered laurel
The easy, ungrudged praise
Comes now to search your manhood
Through all the thankless years
Cold-edged with dear-bought wisdom,
The judgement of your peers.

Die Bürde des weißen Mannes

Nehmt an des Weißen Bürde -
lasst eure Besten gehen,
die Söhne ins Exil,
dort Stämmen beizustehen,
geduldig im Geschirr
der Wilden, die dort sind
neu eingefangner Wesen
halb Dämon, halb noch Kind.

Nehmt an des Weißen Bürde –
Geduld stets aufzubringen,
die Schreckensbotschaft mildern,
den falschen Stolz bezwingen.
Mit wahrem Wort und Rede
hunderte Male schon
Gewinn für Fremde suchen,
euch Fron und ihnen Lohn.

Nehmt an des Weißen Bürde –
den Kampf, der Frieden bringt,
den Hungersnöte wehret
den Seuchentod bezwingt,
und scheint das Ziel dann nahe,
will Fremder Los sich lichten,
seht Trägheit euren Traum,
seht Narrheit ihn vernichten.

Nehmt an des Weißen Bürde –
Nicht die von Herrensöhnen
Von Knechten, Straßenkehrern
zu kleinen Tagelöhnen
Die Häfen, die tabu sind,
die Straßen, euch verboten,
baut sie mit euren Händen,
messt sie mit euren Toten.

Nehmt an des Weißen Bürde –
geht, alten Lohn zu suchen:
dass Kleinere dann tadeln
Beschützte euch verfluchen.
und bringt ihr sie zum Licht
(so zäh) dann tönt ihr Mund
Ägyptens Dunkel Joch,
ihr nahmt’s. Aus welchem Grund?

Nehmt an des Weißen Bürde –
Ihr wagt nicht weniger zu wählen
Noch allzulaut den Freiheitsruf
Erschöpfung zu verhehlen
An jedem Wort und Hauch
an jedem Nchts und Händestreich
Misst stummes, stures Volk
stets euren Gott und euch.

Nehmt an des Weißen Bürde –
Schluss mit dem Kindereden.
Den früh erworbnen Lorbeer,
das Lob der leichten Reden
wird man, den Mann zu prüfen,
nach harter Zeit euch reichen,
mit schwer erkaufter Weisheit
als Urteil der euch Gleichen.
Never sigh for a better world it`s already composed, played and told
