THE AVALANCHE.

The rains of Spring upheave each close- bound rock —
The solid glacier to the vale beneath
Rushes with the o'erwhelming earthquake's shock,
That dread precursor of engulphing death ;
The cloud-directed trees are snapt as when
A branch is shiver'd in the smiting blast,
When iEolus totters th' abodes of men
And oft in ruin scatters them ; aghast
Beholders stand ; — is not the avalanche
Seen where the earth has been in fissures rent,
Like the mind, whose woundings time fails to stanch,
That bleeds and finds in agony its vent,
Weightiness of the anguish bearing down
All minor impediments as from Alpine's crown ?
