Many since Newton's genius brighten'd earth
Have sped the track its splendour pointed out
But strongly gifted were perchance without
That which distinguish'd him, of rarest worth ;
Nor was it solely modesty some call
That which as veiling clouds before the orb
Of light, chasten its beauty, does absorb
Meridian rays that else would burning fall ;
Who that could look into the sparkling mine
Where choicest gems (earth's stars) richly display
Various lustre, as with spirit shine,
Could think their value he had borno away?
And he who glanced at countless wonders knew
But gleams of light had darted on th' inquiring view.
