VOLONTAIREMENT
#1
Howeveb refin'd the pursuit may be
And slightly weighing on the buoyant mind,
Still if in effect 'tis compulsory
The source of pleasure 's stopp'd or left behind ;

But if the Muses listen to the voice
That woos them, answ'ring in un- question'd pow'r,
Tho' weariness await — spirit, rejoice !
For they impart lightness to labour's hour;

Reward no greater than the present glow
The successful votary oft will know.
Much were imparted, but proud domes will fall,
Eas'd by the hand of triumph, and will sink,
The Sculptor — Painter's art, as o'er the brink
Of time's steep, but thought's essence survive all.
