Various is opinion's changeful hue
Which colours differently ev'ry act,
From wide-spread points it takes a partial view,
But sees not always as it is — th' exact,
What with one is not to another fact,
So with the peace of war-rent fifty-six,
As if the concluders of it had lack'd
Judgment, they do not now, on them 'twill fix ;
But did not Nature's accents seem to call
The world to parley, the large mind of all
Had ceased the complications to direct,
Why blacken with storm tranquillity's Heav'n,
When peace will yield what it has ever given —
More than ensanguined conquest could expect ?
