Chastek'd reflection of Sol's glory's beam
Lovelily irradiating like the gleam
O'er genius' lofty brow, enthroned there
While ostentation takes afar its seat,

The cliffs thou art glist'ning where wildly beat
The tumultuous surge like mad despair ;
Now thou 'rt illumining the ruin'd pile,
And as thou shedd'st thy melancholy smile,

It seems pitying th' expectation high
Which thought as if each column would survive,
Proclaim original grandeur, — outlive
Obscuring ages, conqu'ring time defy ;
And shining now on the else darken'd grave
Like hope whose fair anticipations save.
