INHERENT.
#1
How strange is this property of the mind —
Acquisition of knowledge to the last,
As if existence never would be past,
Tho' here 'tis transient as the fleeting wind

Which speeds as do the moments, tho' behind
Time leaves its record on the furrow'd brow
And in the buoyant spirit's less'ning glow,
Where memorials of its track are sign'd !

When he whose Oriental learning proved
What perchance is rare as his strength of soul,
Welfare of others, as attainments loved,
Approach'd the ultimate, unerring goal,
Still curiosity demonstrating roved,
Like Archimedes sought to grasp the whole.
