THE DAWN.

The fluttering skylark heavenward soars,
And as he spreads his light and dewy wing
Like trembling hope, aspiring as he pours
His notes, that seem from happiness to spring,

Is emblematic of the Poet's rise
The morn saluting, whose orient blush
Lovelily suffuses pure Eastern skies,
Like chasten'd modesty's attemper'd flush,

Or as the soul, repair'd its " golden flood,"
Rises to hail the springing of the light,
Invigorated pow'rs with life renew'd
Greets the fair source which day makes doubly bright ;
How oft the fervid muse of Homer woo'd
His genius type in each immortal flight !
