The warrior oft bears the scars of fight,
Which of honour'd fields memorials wear ;
But tho' he stay anniversaries here,
His body sinks as 'neath a crushing blight :
So thus with the mind from which hope her flight
Has ta'en in former years, tho' it survive
And e'en as if with death in life will live,
Its mortal wounds remain, not to the sight
Appearing, each incision leaves its trace,
Unheal'd beneath, altho' the outwardsign
Nothing can, as it never does, erase,
E'en still it lurks as the treacherous mine
Awaiting the destroying hand to place
What ends the purpose of the death- fraught line.
