A Gypsy Dance
The fagots snap and sputter in the fire
That smolders on a cairny forest mead;
Two jared horses munch their evening feed;
One after one the paling coals expire.
The crunk of cranes is sounding nigh and nigher -
That of another roving, singing breed -
Diminishing as northward they proceed
Through ether in their unconstrained desire.
A pipe, supported by a taboret,
Squeaks mournfully the while the embers spark;
A dusky spirit with a castanet
Leads in a strange terpsichorean lark -
In waving scarfs and tossing hair of jet
On wingless nomads flapping in the dark.
The fagots snap and sputter in the fire
That smolders on a cairny forest mead;
Two jared horses munch their evening feed;
One after one the paling coals expire.
The crunk of cranes is sounding nigh and nigher -
That of another roving, singing breed -
Diminishing as northward they proceed
Through ether in their unconstrained desire.
A pipe, supported by a taboret,
Squeaks mournfully the while the embers spark;
A dusky spirit with a castanet
Leads in a strange terpsichorean lark -
In waving scarfs and tossing hair of jet
On wingless nomads flapping in the dark.
