Paton, Joseph Noel: TO THE MIDNIGHT WIND.
#1
TO THE MIDNIGHT WIND.

FROM what bleak wastes of utmost loneliness,-
What desolate steeps of misery, what drear
Caverns of black bewilderment and fear,
Bring'st thou those tones of measureless distress,
Weird wind that shriekest in the midnight gloom
Thine anguished litany ; as 't were the prayer
Of the World's angel in his strong despair
O'er her mad millions rushing on their doom ;
As 't were the moan of Time's woe-weary waves
That o'er Eternity's untroubled deep,
Freighted with drowning souls, for ever sweep ;
As 't were the cry from unremembered graves
Of hopes long dead ? - Ah ! prayer, and moan, and cry,
They are but echoes, heart, of thine own agony.
