Omnipotence resoundeth through the roars
Of mightiest thunder, in deep-ton'd wind
That sweep along the storm-eneompass'd shore,
And in each cave hollow echoing finds; —
But chief in thee, O earthquake I Thou dost tell
Of judgment past the reach of human thought ;
E'en in thy name such fearful myst'ries dwell
That with an untold horror thou art fraught,
We hear of thee and wonder ! Oh ! thou art
Invested with a dread which famine nor
Wing'd pestilence can own, or death's swift dart,
Cleaving th' ensanguin'd fields of direful war ;
For thou engulphest cities, kingdoms spread
With desolation, burier of the living-dead.
Of mightiest thunder, in deep-ton'd wind
That sweep along the storm-eneompass'd shore,
And in each cave hollow echoing finds; —
But chief in thee, O earthquake I Thou dost tell
Of judgment past the reach of human thought ;
E'en in thy name such fearful myst'ries dwell
That with an untold horror thou art fraught,
We hear of thee and wonder ! Oh ! thou art
Invested with a dread which famine nor
Wing'd pestilence can own, or death's swift dart,
Cleaving th' ensanguin'd fields of direful war ;
For thou engulphest cities, kingdoms spread
With desolation, burier of the living-dead.
