Illustration gives light — title implies,
Choice each fine allusion should ever prove.
Not as if thought was seeking life, yet dies
Seeking ; return'd with all that bade it rove.
This, shining in oratory, demands
And from noble memory's strengthen'd pow'r,
While pleasedly obeying its commands
Thought may be wither'd as a lovely flow'r,
Lost in attainings sought ; a brilliant store
Of high suggestions endangering more ;
Weakness emanating from the soul's might,
Like him the great Minstrel portraitured when
The "earthly " was radiantly o'ercome, then
Obscuring even with "exceBS of light."
