Lo, in the orient when the gracious ligth
Lifts up his burning head, each under eye
Doth homage to his new-appearing sight,
Serving with looks his sacred majesty,
And having climb’d the steep-up heavenly hill,
Resembling strong youth in his middle age,
Yet mortal looks adore his beauty still,
Attending on his golden pilgrimage;
But when from highmost pich, with weary car,
Like feeble age he reeleth from the day,
The eyes, ‘fore duteous, now converted are
From his low tract, and look another way.
So thou, thyself outgoing in thy noon,
Unlook’d on diest unless thou get a son.

Sieh, wo im Osten mildes Licht sich hebt.
So siehe auch sein Brandhaupt, das Dich sieht
und preise es wenn es sich neu belebt
und Dir mit Würde dient, wenn es geschieht
und wenn er dann den steilen Berg erklimmt,
wie starke Jugend in den besten Jahr’n
Noch sterbend spürst Du, daß hier alles stimmt
und möchtest mit dem gold’nen Pilger fahr’n.
Doch wenn sein Wagen aus dem höchsten Stand
vor Schwäche taumelnd aus dem Abend fällt,
die Augen nach dem Tagwerk umgewandt
von dem geneigten Weg zur neuen Welt,
so gehst auch Du hinaus in den Zenit,
siehst ohne Kind nicht, wie Dein Leben flieht.
