Nu de varens als een branding wuiven,
Springt de saamgerolde spore los,
Om, verwaaid door 't roodgetinte bosch,
Her en der, naar elken kant te stuiven.
Tot weer nieuwe groene varenkuiven
Op zich heffen uit het donker mos,
En, in telkens breeder, fraaier dos,
Pluim bij pluim en steel langs steel komt schuiven.
Hebt ge, o licht, na regen weer geschenen,
Dwars door 't zachtgetint smaragden woud,
Dan, alsof de varenoogen weenen,
Kletteren droppels langs het groene hout,
Sijplen door den rooden boschgrond henen,
Waar geen voet te treden zich verstout.
