If without arrogance I might assume
The Poet's hallow'd title, and entwine
That fadeless wreath, the fav'ring Muses' sign
Unwith'ring when the body in its tomb
Loses all mortal trace, I would express
One fervent wish, that not in vain I sung,
But that my thoughts should reach the ardent —
young And lonely aspirant, — his vigils bless.
More than by blood such kindred are allied,
For what unites like sympathy of soul ?
May my heart-prompted verse some spirit guide
To truth, to excellence, its radiant goal ;
Made potent by celestial light that gives
Aid to the darken'd soul, which living — ever lives.
