The Syrian river bursting as the thought
Arises from its unknown source, while through
Coelosyria rolling, obeys what drew
The roughen'd course from original nought.
Then with concentr'd pow'r its strength is brought
To the earth's central ocean, while each wave
Mingles with the heaving expanse, where lave
Each mighty ship that farthest ports has sought :
Its rushing billowy current suggests
The mind by tempests swollen to the height,
Darkly above the apprehending breast
Reflecting but the trivial and the light,
Then ev'ry world-engender'd storm at rest,
Losing its drear self perchance in a sea of night.
