The society of one we prize— choose
Than other : advantageously away,
Were no advantage, losing that, yet near
Is it valu'd rightly ? — conjecture could
Decide that a brief space would bring the flood
Consigning t' oblivion all that was here ;
Yet what th' effect ? — as if for aye 'twere cast
This is scann'd, nor vainly hoping by few,
But when the present swells the mighty past
The madness is beheld with reason's view,
