Warrior sinews have not been unstrung
When united with timing of the lyre
In ev'ry evidence ; — Tyrtasus among
The ardent-soul'd Spartans relum'd their fire;
The spirit of the Poet in his verse,
None need descant has broke the captives' . chain,
When martacled hands lifted to rehearse
Th' inspiring words, bondage was snapt in twain.
Sophocles, valiant in the conflict's strife,
A literal embodiment, then show'd
That patriotism metrically rife
Might have with the flood of existence flow'd
And proved the tide of song no shallow stream,
Roll'd o'er — profound and real as bright genius' gleam.
