A stab has "fallen" across th' orb-lit sky—
What thoughts attending its extinguished light?
Does it not expressly typify
Many who seem'd to own proportion'd might ;
But were not stars, as vivid fancy could
Assert was ne'er one, what has vanish'd like
A thought arising in the soul that should
Illume, but destiny its pow'r would strike.
And like expected happiness that gleams
With all the mind could ardently desire,
Tho' experience dissipates, as beams
That form'd the late departed meteor fire,
Or like the cherish'd love that constant seem'd
Yet proves illusive as if mind had dream'd.
