The wish to live in the mem'ry of years
Swelling the mighty future, perchance built
Each wondrous structure, as the verse appears,
Cherish'd as if by blood — in conflict spilt,
If these the inspir'd promptings of the thought
The present hour realizations own,
Still each cloud-aspirer the sky has sought
As for an encircling glorious crown ;
Or was it that expression should be giv'n
Commensurate to the soul, whose bounds, riv'n,
Pierce the far view prescrib'd by Fate's decree,
As it would compass, tho' in vain its pow'r
The mysteries beyond tho finite hour,
Enwrapt in traverseless infinity ?
