If the uninstrncted eye might dart a glance
At Canaletto, and not light a smile
At the presuming that would fain advance
Tho' not its standard, e'en let that play while
Surveying what un connoisseur perceives —
All like the glow of mellow autumn's day
When pure ether the foliage does display
And tho tracery of the branch that weaves
Its lines in clearest outline as the gear
Of each mast the stately ship's lofty pride
Which buoyantly th' opposing waves deride,
And finely deck'd do as their garments wear —
Thus originality remains alone,
But admiration 's o'er his genius thrown.
