Not only did the Norman's pow'r invade
The land of Britain fair while nobly strove
The dauntless Harold, who alone obey'd
The will that prompted him his Isle to love,
For sweet captivity the language owns
With Gallia's fairy beauteousness im- press'd,
Through which the Saxon energy still frowns
As skies that varied-tinted clouds invest,
A type expressive of a darksome fate
Which oft is seen altho' arriving late
Succeeded by fair flow'rs that joy the sight,
Blooming through after-years, while shines upon
Of hope, of happiness the fav'ring sun
With promise as it is with splendour bright.
