Yon circling orbs which deck the mystic sky,
Shedding their influence like fair hopes down
For ever as they gleam resplendently,
The stately night with chastest beauty crown !
But as the admiring vision still surveys
Attractiveness that captivates the soul,
No special star its loveliness displays
Amid the radiant universal whole ;
Thus in history's page, while greatly shine
Full many heroes whose not unmatch'd deeds
Grandly appear, for glories ne'er decline,
The mind no isolated splendour heeds ;
But if the Muse could e'er delighted stay,
O'er Codrus, as from Sol, would fall her brightest ray.
