When the rough breath of AEolus across
Each fleeting cloud proclaims th' ungenial day,
How often does the sunbeam's struggling ray,
Illume as hope the bosom of remorse ;
But evanescent is the welcome gleam,
The fair orb hidden by each gath'ring cloud
Which its spontaneous glories darkly shroud,
As gloom'd reality a radiant dream,
The mirkiness resembling Fate's decree,
Fancy suggests, while the soul seeks to shine.
Like to day's Sovereign, brightening as divine,
Its light enkindled in eternity ;
But as the tale were verity, that he
