What can so test how balanced is the mind
More than an evidence of the amount
Of knowledge of its powers and gifts ? — find
Proofs in experience, their worth account,
To see one conduct as if he possess'd
Capacities, which at his birth denied,
Show that his are not golden, nor impress'd
With what would raise the estimate, not pride !
Who would let his vocal ideas resound
If they offend even the plainest ear ?
Or in the fine orator's sphere be found
Seek the Muse t' approach, visibly not here?
An answer to the last might prove this line
Not wisely chosen, — Spencer was " divine."
