Parent of rivers, whoso exhaustless flow
Commingles with that which divides the earth,
As if thou hadst from it thy genial birth,
What are the emblems thy swift courses show ?
Art thou not like the swellingof the thought,
Which in the breast of genius rising high
Endues th' effect with immortality
On earth — attain'd, as instinctively sought?
Or, resembling the tide of knowledge — vast
As is each varied source from whence it springs ? —
Thou to else arid tracts fresh verdure bring'st,
Like fervid valour concentr'd at last,
And as the soul, replenish'd with each flood
Of strength'ning pow'r, hoardeth the future good.
