What can supply the loss of early love
Whether entwined around the heart or those
Associations which the spirit knows
And ne'er can from appreciation rove
Whatever changes time will elsewhere prove?
But as the flow'rs that deck the Autumn's prime
There yet may bloom the tomb of hope above
Suggesting thoughts more than the first sublime,
Successive blossoms, that new fragrance bring
With the loveliness of a second Spring
Whose various emblems appear around, —
Splendour decay'd, again as erst revives,
Th' antitype of the day departed, lives
Beauty from th' apparently barren ground.
