Undoubted testimony witness'd oft
The valiant passing of one on whom fate
Has frown'd, how it has bome his fame aloft.
And turn'd to glory his most adverse state ;
What more like verity that Richard fell,
Struck by th' usurper's murderous com mand?
Faithfully does perchance the record tell
Avenged by his own glorious hand ;
But many beyond disputation speak —
The conqueror of Peru when assail'd
By assassin vengeance, proved how could break
The flashings of high valour, tho' pow'r fail'd,
And " bravely fighting" often dignifies
Tho end of one who vindicated dies.
