Op 't kaalgegraasde veldje klagend mekt
De hongerschrale touwgebonden geit.
Al malsch fluweel van halmen-weligheid,
Ligt, sarrend groen, de wijde wei gestrekt,
Waar blij ze in draafde, werd zij maar bevrijd
Van 't grauwe touw, waar 't blanke halsje aan trekt.
Maar hoe haar kracht de tengre pezen rekt,
In machtloos martien mat haar áf de strijd.
Zoo rukt mijn ziel aan 't aardezware koord,
Waar Stof me aan bond.... O ziel! tuur liever stil
Naar 't verre droomland, droom dat u behoort
De extase-wei vol wazelicht-geril,
Waar ge eens zult wand'len, eeuwig blij-bekoord
En vloek uw doem niet, noem hem Vrije Wil.
