When Alexander did subdue and bring
The coastly iles of Inde to his empire,
Hee captive tooke proud Porus, Indian king,
And bid him aske what most he did desire.
"Nought," said brave Porus, "do I now require
But that thou use me as a king should bee."
"Thou shalt have friendly hostage to thy hyre
And for my sake I graunt thy sute," said hee.
Long with my passions have I borne debate,
Oft have I fought and now have lost the feeld,
It is my fortune for to be defeate.
I am thy captive and, faire dame, I yeeld:
As Macedon was to the King of Inde,
If not mine, yet for thy cause be kinde.
