A Waterway in Venice - ZaunköniG - 24.12.2008

A Waterway in Venice

The season is the bountiful and boon;
Around the sea-built city's walls and tide
Has raised the street canals on either side
From ancient mansions to the barracoon.

A gondolier suspends a pink festoon,
And veers his vessel with a swan-like glide
To pole a couple for a moonlight ride
Among the marvels of the quaint lagoon.

The water laps the basement that surround
The marble bridge, Rialto, on the route;
St. Mark's exhibits, none the less renowned,

The costly art of Byzantine repute;
Beneath a balcony, Venetian-crowned,
The lovers lag to listen to a lute.
