Sonnet and Acrostic
Inscribed to a Descendant of Robert Cushman
A record of God's work, what, He has done,
Unfolds in lives of those whom God has met;
Good men of His own host, whose hearts are set
Upheld by grace till victor's crowns are won.
Still in the lapse of years, from son to son,
Time should not make successive sons forget
Ancestral virtues of the dead, who yet
Claim audience, inferior to none.
Upon unchanging truth the right shall stand
Secure for all who choose the Pilgrim's way,
Heirs they are written to the Promised Land.
March, pilgrims, on, nor swerve to either hand, -
Angels yor servitors, by night, by day,
Near, they escort to the blessèd strand.
