FRIENDSHIP.

ACROSS the vast of ocean, on the shore
That claims you for her own by right of birth,
Receive this echo from the older earth
Which by the right of friendship claims you more,
And by remembrance deep in the heart's core
Of those you parted from but now, of worth
Whose new removal makes us feel a dearth
Whereof we had not prescience before :
Yet whose insistance does but grow more strong
And but the more enduring as the days
Follow each other, and their spaces lend
New joy to our glad meeting in the throng
Of hurrying men, new light to the Fate's ways
That of a passing stranger made a friend.
