Dives
From depths of hell and torment of my pain
I lift sad look to Thy far throne, O Christ;
From hate of Thee, where nought but love sufficed
The heart's desire, this cry goes up in vain.
Wealth has been mine - not such as they obtain
Who dig for gold-; by wandering stars enticed,
Its hope of Thee my soul has sacrificed
In climbing high to treasures of the brain.
And now a gulf my wisdom could not see
Ere I to depths of full possession fell,
Yawns 'twixt the happiness of loss and me.
And wealth is mine. And 'tis Thy just decree
That still my soul, rom self-appointed hell,
Yearns towards that heaven which is love of Thee.
