In Memoriam
I wrote my name upon Thy spotless soul,
As men have written on the sun-kissed snow,
Nor paused to think that Heaven’s divinest glow
Would draw thy pureness to its natural pole.
And thou art lifted from my poor control
To that far height whence all our blessings flow.
But as the snow, drawn upwards from this earth,
Where once it rested in a lovely death,
Gains from solution a sopremer birth,
And falls in rain that, fruitful, watereth
The thirsty soil of spring, so shall my dearth
Of thee, beloved, be my life’s new breath.
From heaven, which is thy home, shall then again
Thy snow-born presence drench my soul as rain.
