'One word is too often profaned'

I

One word is to often profaned
For me to profane it,
One feeling too falsely disdained
For thee to disdain it;
One hope is too like despair
For prudence to smother,
And pity from thee more dear
Than that from another.

II

I can give not what men call love,
But wilt thou accept not
The worship the heart lifts above
And the Heavens reject not, –
The desire of the moth for the star,
Of the night for the morrow,
The devotion to something afar
From the sphere of our sorrow?

Posthumous Poems, 1824

Percy Bysshe Shelley

Ein Wort wird zu häufig missbraucht

I

Ein Wort wird zu häufig missbraucht,
Um es zu missbrauchen;
Ein Gefühl wird zu falsch angeschaut,
Um für dich zu taugen;
Eine Hoffnung steht so auf Verlust,
Dass sie von Klugen gemieden;
Nur Mitleid aus deiner Brust
Ist mir zum Glück geblieben.

II

Kann nicht wie And’re Liebe geben.
Aber willst du dich vereinen
In Diensten, die das Herz aufheben,
Die die Himmel nicht verneinen, –
Der Drang der Motte nach dem Stern
Und der Nacht zum Morgen,
Verehrung dessen, was so fern
Der Sphäre unserer Sorgen?
