Last Prayer

Before the beginning, Thou hast foreknown the end,
Before the birthday the death-bed was seen of Thee:
Cleanse what I cannot cleanse, mend what I cannot mend,
O Lord All-Merciful, be merciful to me.

While the end is drawing near I know not mine end;
Birth I recall not, my death I cannot foresee:
O God, arise to defend, arise to befriend,

Letztes Gebet

Bevor alles begann, hast Du den Schluss erblickt,
Hast vor meiner Geburt mein Sterbebett geseh’n:
Nun mach das Kleid mir heil, das ich nicht krieg geflickt,
Du all-gnädiger Gott, lass Gnade mir gescheh’n.

Während mein Ende naht, weiß ich nicht wann es sei;
Kann weder die Geburt, noch meinen Tod versteh’n:
O Herr, erschein, mach mich in Deinem Schutze frei,
