Emily Jane Brontë (1818 – 1848)

The night is darkening

The night is darkening round me,
The wild winds coldly blow;
But a tyrant spell has bound me
And I cannot, cannot go.

The giant trees are bending
Their bare boughs weighed with snow,
And the storm is fast descending
And yet I cannot go.

Clouds beyond clouds above me,
Wastes beyond wastes below;
But nothing drear can move me;
I will not, cannot go.

Emily Jane Brontë (1818 – 1848)

Die Nacht, sie dunkelt

Die Nacht, sie dunkelt um mich,
Und windkalt muss ich stehn;
Doch ein Zauberspruch, der bannt mich,
Und ich kann und kann nicht gehn.

Der Riesenbäume Zweige
Sind schwer mit Schnee versehn,
Der Sturm geht schnell zur Neige,
Doch ich kann noch nicht gehn.

Wolkengebirge deckt mich,
Ins Ödland muss ich sehn.
Doch keine Not bewegt mich;
Ich will, ich kann nicht gehn.
