FLOWN

AGAIN in dreams thou comest to my side;
Again I hear thy voice, again I trace
The faultless features of thy sunny face —
Sweet eyes, pure brow, and dimpled cheeks where hide

The frolic sunbeams ; once again the wide
Fair fields smile round us, and thy maiden grace
Makes sudden light in every dusky place
Where all day long the dewy shadows bide.

But thou hast flown — ah ! whither hast thou flown ?
What mortal soul thy dwelling-place may guess?
With, empty arms, and hopes like dead leaves blown,

Wearily up time's flinty steep I press;
Yet, O my love, love's rugged way is known,
And I shall find thee crowned with blessedness.
