Hark to the wail on Afric's sun-burnt shore.
The cry of fetter'd misery resounds,
To thee it calls, Oh Albion, the roar
Of rushing waters can prescribe no bounds:

Arise, and with resistless might to free
Each sable bondsman — sov'reign of the sea
And burst for aye the yoke of slavery,
Thou own'st the pow'r, it hath been scarcely shown,

Tho' latent it has adequately grown.
Wealth cannot crush the hideous traffic force
(Not moral strength unaided) will alone
Avail with those impervious to remorse ;
Yes ! let the thunder of thine anger peal,
The echoing will be conquest— thy triumph seal.
