ON SEEING A BAS-RELIEF OF THE DEATH OF SIR PHILIP SIDNEY,
(" Refusing a cup of water in favour of one of his wounded soldiers.")

It might be conj ectur'd that feigned thought,
Sentiment dictated the poet's style,
Tho' Poesy repels this, howe'er brought —
The reality of a soul-lit smile,

Yet who can question that the soldier bard
As characteristically possess'd
The true spirit of genius in his breast
Development of which the wound retard

Could not, rather disnTay'd— waiting till then —
Tho' evident, perchance, in minor acts ?
If a higher title 's requir'd as when
Sol is greater than beamingwhich refracts,
(As e'er) poetry beautifully seen
Admiriug's tribute lovelily exacts.
