What a chastisement to the victor e'en
Is war, for in his greatest gain is loss
Accumulated by himself, when seen
Bright golden conquest, glitt'ring is but dross ;
Were th' entire realm subdu'd 'gainst which he fought,
Tho' seldom that attainment 's even sought,
Could it compensate for the ruin-tears,
Th' antitypical dfootf-successive woe,
Whose poison'd streams through gene rations flow,
The treasure squander'd? — which like dust appears
Compar'd to holocausts of life which rise
To glorify the conqueror's sacrifice,
Symbolic of what Milton's fiends surround —
Such honour the destroyer ever found.
