Where is the poet who can bring the aid
Of inspir'd genius ever when he will,
Rather, the summons has he not obey'd,
Which, if he's true, comes as from Delphi's hill?

And wise is this, as if it were ordain'd,
For if the verse could flow free as the speech
What honour would the Muses have at- tain'd,
Who, as invisibly conceptions teach ?

Or, if he could endure the constant toil
That must enervate on Parnassus' steep,
Howe'er could glow the warm approving smile?
Slight admiration would his efforts reap,
But like the flow'rs, num'rous as lovely, they
Were then as unheeded in tho world's trodden way.
