How oft related is it that some, placed
By fortune even at its envied height
Whose talents and whose erudition graced
Such elevation to th' observing sight

Seek as if to relieve their splendour's light
Where all is fairer than th' intentions are, —
While calmness is around will nobly fight
The unresisting denizens, and mar

More beauty and innoxiousness than they
With reason gifted ever will display ;
For wanton mischief seeking pleasure there
Where fiendish promptings only could delight, —
In needlessly blasting— why should not blight
And sudden ruin o'ertake them — despair?
