If Virgil thought, as a modern one wrote
Woman " a fair defect" on nature's brow,
He did not the unfair persuasion show
In portraying Dido, with passion fraught ;

Eloquent as majestic is her grief,
Anger at outraged trust and proud disdain,
Reproof for "benefits" giv"n — noble brief
As, recurring, that mem'ry might remain ;

Alliances endanger'd, and her sway
In peril, yet this amidst her thoughts' crowd
Because they are thus, for her spirit's stay
Hopelessly is wreck'd, and unfathom'd love
Unheeded— she sinks as the rent mast, bow'd
Yields to the fiery volume from above.
