TO THE REV. THOMAS MARTYN
ON HIS EDITION Of MILLER'S GARDENER´S DICTIONARY

MARTYN, Great is thy Work; deep lodg'd it's Praise
Time rarely hath beheld a Work so Great ;
Which Science, Toil, and his slow hand create.
What rises suddenly sudden decays :

Like the prompt Herb which courts the Summer-blaze ;
Brief Space unites their Birth, full Growth, and Fate;
While Trees slow-form'd live a proportion'd Date,
And Ages mark their sacred length of Days.

Such this MILLERIAN Oak ! — The potent shoot
From the small Nut in long progression spred;
And though the Trunk tower to stherial skies,
And it's full clustering Foliage fix our eyes,
Though as a Grove expand it's mighty Head,
More aweful its vast Labyrinth of Root.
