Robert Burns

DIED JULY 21, 1796

LIKE some lone meteor from the zenith sprung
That burns with radiant sweep across the night
A moment blazing on the startled sight
To plunge its headlong glories low among
The fatal glooms by rising tempests hung
About the wild horizon: such the height
Beloved bard, thy spirit swift and bright
Did first enjoy, to such a doom was flung. -
But yet from where the fleeting, falling star
Of thy brief life to stormy death went down
Thy fixed star of fame hath risen on high,
To shine with orbs that everlasting are,
And o'er the southern as the northern sky
To pour the steadfast rays of thy renown.
